THE Costa del Sol has been named as the best value for money winter sun destination in the world by a UK report.

The Post Office’s Winter Sunshine Report puts the Costa del Sol ahead of other popular destinations such as Bali and Portugal in terms of cost, stating that visitors need only spend on average £44.03 (€55) per day for a ‘holiday basket’ of essential items such as a meal for two, sun cream, wine, coffee, etc) in order to enjoy their holiday. This is 7 per cent less than the figure for 2013 and is part of a general reduction in prices across the board. The only places that are now more expensive for a winter break are Dubai and Orlando, Florida.

The Costa del Sol came out just ahead of Bali in the report, followed by Portugal’s Algarve, Sri Lanka, and Tenerife in Spain.

“It is fantastic news that the cost of holidaying to many popular destinations is going down just as we head into winter and the colder months of the year,” said Bob Atkinson of TravelSupermarket. “It’s a combination of the strength of the pound against many currencies we like to take our winter breaks in, coupled with local hoteliers and tourist businesses fighting for our holiday spending money by slashing prices in resorts for everything from eating out to entrances to popular attractions. Ensuring you get your winter sun need not cost you the earth.”
