The rise and fall of the Berlin Wall

TODAY is Remembrance day, which in the UK we remember the fallen that have fought for us in war. In Germany another special celebration is occurring, the 25 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

A service was held for those that were victims of the East German communist regime, of which Chancellor Angela Merkel, who grew up in East Germany, attended.

Although the wall is no longer there is a guard tower still marks the “death strip” and this weekend around 7,000 white balloons have been pegged to the ground for nine miles of the walls route tracing where the 155km wall once stood. Now only around three km is still standing.

Over a million visitors have travelled to Berlin for the celebrations this weekend, which will come to an end later this evening at the Brandenburg Gate after a party is held to mark the 25 anniversary of the end of the Berlin Wall.
