LIONEL Messi has matched a 59-year-old goalscoring recored having notched his 251st goal in La Liga.

On his 289th La Liga appearance he scored from a free kick against Sevilla to draw level with Telmo Zarra who played for Atletico Bilbao for 15 years.

In his 10 years as a senior player at Barcelona 27-year-old Messi has taken a host of honours, including equalling Raul’s record of 71 Champions League goas, being named World Footballer of the Year four times and picking up the small matter of 21 trophies. Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s great rival at Real Madrid, is ninth on the list with 197 goals in just 177 games.
