BERKANE, a ferry which was abandoned in Almeria port almost two years ago, has been bought by a Turkish company.
Following a number of unsuccessful attempts by Almeria courts to auction the ferry, Turkish group Bereket Gemi Sokum Ithalat Ihracat Ticaret LTD bought the ship for €1.8 million and must also pay off debts it has incurred with Almeria Port Authorities for approximately €2 million.
The group has not yet disclosed how it intends to use the ferry, which covered the Almeria port-Nador route for many years before Moroccan company Comarit left it docked and the crew unpaid in January 2012.
