WHILE the sailors of the Volvo Ocean Race get a well-earned break and return home to their families for the Christmas period, the shore crews will be spending Christmas in sunny Abu Dhabi, working on the boats so they are ready for the third leg of the race.
Working in 24-degree heat, the crews will be repairing and maintaining all seven boats in time for the in-port race on January 2. According to the Volvo Ocean Race official website, most of the shore crews and boatyard staff will at least have Christmas Day off for a bit of rest and relaxation, and plenty of Skype time with their families back home.
