PARADE: Streets are lit up during carnival.
CARNIVAL 2015 is underway. Torrevieja leads the way in the Mardi Gras-style celebrations that sweep across Alicante Province in the coming weeks.
The city has already had the declarations and coronation of the Carnival Queens at the Municipal Theatre, and the eighth annual Drag Queen Contest, now an ever-popular event in Torrevieja’s cultural calendar, was held at the weekend. Thirteen entrants graced the stage with winner on the night being Drag Debu, a young act from Torremolinos.
The main carnival parades are not to be missed, and this year the carnival, now declared to be of ‘Provincial Tourist Interest,’ will include 37 troupes, including five foreign groups, who will be competing for a prize.
The prize-giving ceremony will take place on February 8 at the Municipal Theatre after the afternoon parade, which starts at 4pm, leaving from the Plaza Maria de la Asuncion and heading down Calle Ramon Gallud and along to Calle Patricio Perez.
The following Saturday, February 14, sees the main night parade leave from the same spot at 10pm.
A carnival parade is also planned for the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre in La Zenia on February 28. The parade will leave from Plaza Armengola at around 6.30pm.
