MERCAT CHEF: The proof of the pudding.
COOKERY practice for budding young chefs each Saturday in Javea’s municipal market is proving very successful.
The morning starts with the seven to 14-year-old participants inspecting the seasonal produce and selecting ingredients for that day’s task. One of the area’s local chefs then shows them how to prepare a simple but healthy main course and dessert using quality produce that they can eat themselves or take home.
The children also learn to appreciate the cost of each dish and the work that goes into its preparation, explained Javea’s councillor for Agriculture and Economic Development.
At present there is no element of rivalry although at a later date outstanding pupils might compete against each other, he said.
The sessions cost between €12 to €15 each, depending on ingredients, and numbers are limited to 20. It is necessary to sign up first at the Agencia de Desarrollo Local or Creama (Avenida Trenc d’Alba , 2) or by calling 965 794 266, although this Saturday’s class is already complete, the town hall warned.
