A MAJOR fire broke out last Friday (January 30) at the inner harbour of Motril’s port and burned well through the night.
The fire started at around 5pm in the Las Azucenas dock, in an area earmarked for goods where a pile of biomass was stocked.
Firefighters from Motril, Almuñecar, Iznalloz and Granada, as well as Axarquia towns such as Velez-Malaga and Nerja, attended rapidly to join the efforts to extinguish the fire, which became difficult due to the high winds registered in the area.
At around 10am on Saturday, the fire was controlled although not extinguished, as it is estimated that the natural process of the material’s combustion will last still a few more days.
