Neymar deal in the spotlight

BARCELONA president Josep Maria Bartomeu is to face questioning in court over the signing of Brazilian playmaker Neymar in 2013.

Madrid’s High Court said this Tuesday that Bartomeu is to be questioned on February 13 over whether Barcelona and their directors defrauded the Spanish tax office by €2.8 million, according to Reuters.

He is to appear before Judge Pablo Ruz, who wrote in the ruling: “It must be investigated whether the sum of €2,845,700 was defrauded from the public treasury by FC Barcelona and its current leaders, with Josep Maria Bartomeu as president.”

The prosecution alleges that the club and its former president Sandro Rosell paid more than €80 million for Neymar and not the €57 million they declared to Spanish tax authorities.

In a statement on their website, FC Barcelona said: “In the last few months, FC Barcelona has asserted its innocence, providing all the documentation requested on numerous occasions. The club has been advised all along by tax law specialists.”
