OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested two Matagorda residents suspected of stealing tomatoes from a farm in El Ejido.
JACC, aged 31, and 50-year-old MCC were stopped by Guardia Civil officers as they transported 80 kilograms of tomatoes in Viñas de El Ejido. During an initial conversation the officers established that the tomatoes had been taken from a nearby greenhouse.
The officers spoke to the owner of the greenhouse who said that 200 kilograms of tomatoes had been stolen. He escorted them to the crop area and showed the officers the affected plants, many of which had been damaged as a result of the theft.
Access had been through a hole cut in the side of the greenhouse. Instead of taking the tomatoes gently, the thieves had ripped at the plants causing a massive amount of damage in their haste. The officers were able to see an estimated 600 tomatoes scattered on the floor, left to rot.
After reviewing the owner’s information, the officers arrested the two alleged thieves and returned the 80 kilograms of tomatoes to the greenhouse owner.
The two men, along with the case details, have been presented to court for processing.
