Community feeling alive and well at Caspers Bar

FISH FRIDAY: Feeling hungry? Try the large fish and chips at Caspers Bar.

CASPERS BAR in Albir has a reputation for good quality, home cooked food so the Euro Weekly News went along on fish and chip Friday to try it for ourselves.

Booking is highly recommended if you want the fish as it is always brought in fresh and sells quickly and no wonder.

The sheer size of the fish was astounding measuring 12 inches in length! Owners Steve and Hazel Thomas told us that each fish always weighs between 11 and 16oz, (unless you request a smaller portion). The batter was scrumptious and the chips were spot on and it was just too good to leave anything, so desserts were missed this time, as tempting as they were.

The chicken curry, which came with either rice or chips was also sampled and again was a really good-sized portion with the customers also being asked how strong they would like it. Only the best fresh chicken breast is used and it suited the taste buds and another clean, empty plate was produced.

Whatever your choice, Caspers Bar is likely to have it, and whether you want a full meal or a sandwich, burger or snack, Steve will take great pride in making it for you. Steve and Hazel have owned this bar for the last six years and give everyone a very warm welcome.

In fact, it is like a little community centre.

The bar is situated on the left, down the road opposite Consum and is open every day except Tuesdays, from 11am. Breakfasts are served until 2pm. Vegans and vegetarians are also catered for.

The selection of main meals include dishes such as steak and ale pie, cajun chicken, lasagne, gammon and spaghetti bolognaise with garlic bread. All are reasonably priced (most around €5.95 or €6.50).

A selection of starters and desserts are also available and lighter meals and snacks such as jacket potatoes from €2.50 and burgers from €3.

Fans of the Sunday roast will enjoy a visit to Caspers Bar every Sunday with beef, pork or chicken served with seasonable vegetables. The portions are large, yet the prices are cheap, costing €5.95 for the main course, €7.95 for two courses and €9.95 for three courses including wine or beer.

Events at Caspers include quiz night with Drew the piper on a Thursday (free entry). There are also darts nights, karaoke nights and on Wednesdays and Friday afternoons Spanish lessons with Gwen Cookson, author of the Simply Speak Spanish books.

All sporting events are shown on big screen, live TV.

Customers can also make good use of the large sunny terrace.

So whether you pop in for a quick drink, a bite to eat or to join in with the fun, you are guaranteed great service from these friendly owners.

Further information can be found on their Facebook site.
