THE mayor of Motril visited the site of the town’s fifth football field to oversee extensive renovation work that has just begun.
Mayor Luisa Garcia Chamorro was joined by Sports councillor, Jose Garcia Fuentes, and other council representatives at the site, which is located at El Varadero.
The field, which is in very poor condition, was owned by the town’s Port Authorities, which have now transferred the plot to the council.
The renovation project was put out to public tender and awarded to company Fieldturf Poligras SA.
Plans are to returf the pitch with artificial grass and install a new irrigation system, as well as improving lighting and renovating the changing rooms, according to Mr Fuentes.
Once the works are done, the town will officially have five operational sports facilities, together with the fields at Hermanos Callejon, Puntalon, Paulino Salgado in Torrenueva and the one in Calahonda, which was inaugurated last summer.
