Citizens say no to new pylons in Mallorca

CONTROVERSY has once again been sparked in Mallorca as the central government has reopened a project to install new electricity pylons across several towns.

The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism has included in the Electric Industry Plan 2015-2020 a project to install the pylons in Estacio de Bessons (Manacor), Arta and Portocolom. After it was first proposed in 2009, the project was cancelled in 2013, following local people’s strong protests over social and environmental concerns.

New mobilisations have now been called by pressure groups such as the ‘Plataforma Pus Estes’ in Portocolom, and in Llevant, the ‘Platform in defence of Llevant and against the new high voltage power line.’

Both groups will present cases before the government’s office in Mallorca, opposing the project that was reintroduced on December 11 2014.

Their alternative proposals include the increase in voltage of existing lines to solve the problem, amongst others.
