YOUNGSTERS in Valencia Region treated for alcohol abuse by paramedics must now undergo monitoring and therapy sessions.
Due to the increase in the abuse of alcohol by young people, the new Health Law, recently approved by the Valencian Parliament, aims to target the problem by offering more assistance for young people treated for alcohol abuse.
The new rule also states that the family must undertake monitoring and attend therapy sessions if the youngster is under the age of 18. The law states if the family declines to make this commitment, the case will be ‘made know to the prosecutor of minors.’
The emergency department at Alicante General Hospital deals with around two to three cases of alcohol intoxication in minors each weekend, with the problem increasing during fiestas.
Recent surveys by the Ministry of Health indicate that about half of those aged between 14 and 18 years have drunk alcohol in the last month and 50 per cent have participated in binge drinking.
