Guadiaro plans an equestrian district

THE Guadiaro area of the Costa del Sol could be in for a boost in visitor numbers as talks are underway to plan a large equestrian facility.

The project aims to provide specific facilities for polo and equestrian teams to train all year round in an equestrian district, similar to one found in Florida in the US.

The mayors of San Roque, Jimena and Castellar met with representatives from polo and equestrian groups and council technicians to define the project, which they intend to present to the Junta de Andalucia regional government for approval.

Initial studies by Santa Maria Polo Foundation reported that the Vega del Guadiaro area has three main advantages for facilities of this type: an ideal climate, top quality tourist facilities and Andalucia’s general love of horses.

Sports and breeding facilities with training areas and stabling for mid- and high-handicap polo teams would be created, and complementary services including rural accommodation, catering, training facilities for riders and meeting rooms are also being considered.
