Huercal Overa honours pioneering cornea implant doctor

HUERCAL OVERA Town Hall has awarded the title of Distinguished Visitor to Doctor Antonio Campos Muñoz.

Doctor Campoz Muñoz was the first person in the world to build an artificial cornea and implant it into patients with corneal blindness. He was presented with the award at the town hall during his visit to the town.

Mayor of Huercal Overa, Domingo Fernandez, said: “The town council bestows this title and we hope that we can count on several more visits from the doctor so we can join him in his major achievements and progress in the field of medicine and technology.”

Doctor Campos Muñoz is a professor of historiology in the faculty of medicine at the University of Granada, president of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Granada and Eastern Andalucia, and the director of the Research Group of Tissue Engineering. He is also an academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine, occupying the role of the Ramon y Cajal Nobel Prize.

He was the first to build a complete artificial cornea in his laboratory and also the first to implant a cornea. He was also the first in the world to generate artificial human skin and oral mucus from stem cells for treatment of patients with severe burns or tumours. He has been recognised with several awards worldwide for his scientific progress.
