Focusing on a part of history seldom seen – women in World War II – The Nightingale tells the story of two French sisters whose lives are turned upside down when the Nazis invade France.

Vianne is alone after her husband goes to fight in the war, and when the Germans invade her village her home is requisitioned by a German captain.

Vianne and her daughter must live side-by-side with the enemy or lose everything.

Meanwhile, Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious 18-year-old who joins the French Resistance, risking her life to save others.

Each sister embarks on her own dangerous path towards survival, love and freedom in German-occupied, wartorn France.
