WORK on the next stage of the metro in Malaga City is due to start after Easter.
Public Works councillor for the Junta de Andalucia regional government, Maria Jesus Serrano, announced that the contract had been awarded jointly to Acciona and Sando construction companies and work would begin in April as agreed with the city brotherhoods to avoid affecting Easter processions.
The work includes a 295-metre tunnel between Tetuan bridge and the crossroads between Alameda Principal and Calle Torregorda, where a station will be built.
Although a budget of €44.7 million had been allotted, the joint project presented by Acciona and Sando gave a price of €26.6 million and also reduced the estimated construction time to 28 months (five fewer than originally calculated) meaning the work should be complete in August 2017.
If everything goes to plan, the Ataranzas station should be ready to open by the end of 2017.
