Angry resident takes drastic step to halt works

A MIJAS man took drastic measures to avoid roadworks starting in his street by dousing himself with petrol and threatening to set himself alight.

As reported last week by EWN, residents of the streets by the Las Lagunas health centre are up in arms and fighting to halt works on the streets which they claim will mean at least 200 parking spaces are lost.

On Monday morning, when work was due to begin on Calle San Mateo, there was still no sign of the written promise residents had requested confirming plans had changed to avoid parking places disappearing.

Therefore, Lazaro Gutierrez, who later declared he would do it again if necessary, decided to take matters into his own hands to stop the diggers from moving in.

Gutierrez appeared on the street at 9.10am holding a bottle of petrol in one hand and a lighter in the other.

Before anyone could stop him, the angry resident poured petrol over himself and locked himself inside his car.

After an hour policemen finally managed to persuade the man to get out of the car and arrested him for disorderly conduct.

A council spokesman later declared that Mijas Mayor Angel Nozal had met with the residents days beforehand and agreed to find a compromise.
