Love is in the air for Costa bowlers

THE bowlers of the Costa del Sol proved that they could be romantic too, with several clubs on the coast holding special Valentine’s weekend-themed fun and frolics, with a little bowling thrown in for good measure too.

Miraflores BC, Benavista BC and Belplaya BC all featured club members in extravagant and lavish red-and-white costumes for the day of love, and champagne and chocolates were never too far away.

There was no love lost in the bowling action, however. At Benavista, Barry Pemberton was crowned men’s Singles champion in the annual club competition, and his wife Wendy scooped the women’s Singles category.

The husband and wife team will now go on to represent the club at the Champion of Champions competition in April.

In a close-fought competition featuring extremely tight games, Barry beat Malcolm Greenwood and Wendy defeated Jeannie Cooper to make the Pembertons Singles club champions, a fitting coupling given the weekend.

The winners of the Trips category were Tucker Brady, Dougal Beedie and Phil Guttridge, who defeated Roy Saunders, Wendy Pemberton and Bill Davies in a nail-biting final. The Pairs match was won by an in-form Sandy Guthrie and Judy Old with a convincing win over Frances Farmer and Roy Saunders.

At Miraflores meanwhile, bowling nearly played second fiddle to the glamour of the weekend, but there was a healthy entry of 18 mixed pairs, played on nine rinks on both greens.

The winners were Dorothy Pilmoor and Dudley Calder, who after a closely contested tie-breaker, overcame Stuart Thacker and Nancy Shaw. Spot prizes went to Dine and Kay, and Mike and Pam Kinane took the booby prize, a rolling pin.

Miraflores will also be celebrating St Patrick’s Day on March 17, and all are welcome.

Belplaya BC also got in on the Valentine theme, with Sandra Kelly winning the Best Dress competition. Winners of the Drawn Pairs were Geoff Edginton and Sandra Kelly and runners-up were Alan Bicknell and Pat Baker. Last Man Standing was Derek Rawnsley and pairs with least score were Charles Ottaway and Ethnie Scofield.
