JAVEA pupils could soon have a ‘safe route’ system to school.
The town hall has presented local schools and representatives from local parents’ associations with an outline of the ‘Camins Escolars’ scheme. Instead of being driven to school, children would be able to walk or cycle to school in safety on their own.
Now that parents and teachers have been informed, the town hall is working on the technical side of the project, studying advisable routes and taking into account the presence of police at dangerous crossroads and the number of pedestrian crossings.
The town hall is also considering the possibility of reorganising or limiting traffic in the vicinity of some schools to improve safety and also eliminate traffic jams.
Pupils themselves would like to walk to school on their own or meet up with their friends on the way, members of the Consell dels Xiquets (Children’s Council) told councillors.
The scheme will be tried out during the last weeks of the school year so that possible flaws can be detected and ironed out before children return in September.
