THE first shipment of refuse-derived fuel from Italy has arrived in Mallorca to be incinerated.

In total, 3,000 tonnes of this material also known as solid recovered fuel (SRF) arrived at Palma’s port last Thursday (Friday 26).

The waste was produced in the municipalities of Giuliano and Tuffino and transported to Mallorca from Salerno port.

Around 24,000 tonnes of the material are expected to arrive on the island to be incinerated over the next few weeks as Sabadell (Catalonia) and Ireland are also due to send.

The council also approved reception of 82,250 tonnes of waste from Naples and Northern Ireland in 2015.

The refuse-derived fuel is obtained after processing urban waste and it is incinerated to generate electric energy.
