THE Costa del Sol is preparing for what is expected to be a great year for golf tourism, course managers and the tourism board have announced.

Spain has become the top destination for European golfers, the International Golf Tour Operators’ Association reported, with golfers from the UK, Germany, Scandinavia and France preferring it to others within the continent, and the Costa del Golf, with 73 courses, is still the top destination for these golfers when they travel abroad to play.

Course managers are expecting even better results this year than they registered in 2014, which was considered the best by far since 2009 for the sector.

Costa del Sol Tourism board head Elias Bendodo stressed that golf tourism is a great way to attract visitors all year round and said that statistics showed golfers spend 46 per cent more than average tourists in the area, with average amounts per day per golfer of €86 compared to an average of €59 per day for non-golfer visitors.
