Burning waste tip in hands of the courts

BURNING WASTE: Film crew hear about problems of burning waste tip.

THE burning waste tip on the border of Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada, which has been spewing out toxic fumes for the last several years has had a visit by a crew from National Channel 1 TV.

The film crew was in the area investigating illegal waste tips and thanks to cooperation between CLARO and the action group against illegal waste tips, Vertivega, after filming in La Murada, next to Orihuela City, they went to report on the burning waste tip on the border of Orihuela Costa and Pilar.

This illegal waste tip was used to dump waste of all sorts from all over the area rather than companies paying to have it disposed of and treated legally. Years after they stopped dumping, the process of natural internal combustion resulted in the mountain of rubbish beginning to smoulder and flame and toxic gases seep into the atmosphere.

President of Las Ramblas Urbanisation, Bob Hammond, explained the problems of the burning waste tip to the crew along with CLARO councillor, Bob Houliston and Vicente Perez of Vertivega as they saw the 20m high mountain of waste covering an area of around 50,000 square metres. Visible are remnants of tyres, plastic and metal and below the surface is decomposed and smouldering domestic waste.

The visit coincided with the arrival of a reply to the denuncia elaborated by Bob Hammond, with the help of CLARO made last July. The Guardia Civil environmental branch, SEPRONA, has formally said that the complaint made was investigated by them and their report was submitted to the criminal court in Orihuela which has agreed to investigate the complaint. SEPRONA has also submitted a report to the Environmental Prosecutor in Alicante.
