THE Fallas fire fiestas are a time to eat, drink and be merry.
Aware of this, the organisers and the Federacion Marina Alta Solidaria have put the merrymaking to good use with a bottle top campaign.
The plastic tops will be taken for recycling and the money raised donated to children in the area with medical and orthopaedic needs.
Over the past year Marina Alta Solidaria has collected four tons of bottle tops and raised €1,000, said the charity’s coordinator Juanjo Sala.
“This is a gesture of solidarity and an initiative that could extend to other Denia fiestas,” said a grateful Sala.
Balearia, the shipping line that operates the ferry between Denia and Baleares, is also collaborating. The Fallas committee whose members collect most bottle tops will win a prize of four tickets to Formentera.
Containers have been installed outside the Casal or headquarters of the committees responsible for one of the 11 multi-coloured creations that will go up in flames tonight.
