Update: Arrested terrorist suspects ‘threat to King Felipe VI’

SPANISH Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz has confirmed in a statement made on Monday that a plan was allegedly in process to attack the King of Spain and his family. Police have found notes with written threats against the royal family.

The discovery was made as part of an ongoing operation against terrorist cells throughout Spain. Many of the suspected terrorists are thought to be actively recruiting fighters for Syria and Iraq.

IN an ongoing operation Spanish Police have arrested eight suspected terrorists in Girona, Barcelona, Ciudad Real and Ávila. In a press release given by Interior Ministry police sources it has been stated that the suspects were mainly involved in recruiting new fighters to serve in Syria and Iraq.

All the current suspects are Spanish citizens, although five are apparently of North African descent. During the raids Police said that a large amount of propaganda material, plus two shotguns were discovered. Intelligence for the arrests was also provided by Morocco’s security services.

In a related raid last week police detained two alleged jihadists who were planning attacks in Spain and Europe.
