Concerns over 'campsite' plans in the Sierra Escalona

MAYOR Monserrate Guillen of the Los Verdes (Green) party has promised to meet with environmental groups who have denounced the lack of information about the project to build a recreational and camping area in the Sierra Escalona.

The Association of Friends of the Sierra Escalona (ASE) in Torremendo are amongst those objecting to the plans covering more than 100,000 square metres of natural land, which they say is protected. Although announced as a ‘rural tourism scheme’ and summer educational centre for youngsters, the ASE fear it is nothing more than a campsite.

Guillen said he was very cautious about the impact it may have but added, “it would not be negative” and alluded to the fact that these types of activities operate at the heart of national parks across the country.

The Town Planning Department has said there will be around 50,000 square metres of occupied facilities including wooden houses, pools and a club house.
