THE GOB (Ornithological Group of the Balearic Islands) has requested that the Mallorca Provincial Council stops weed-killing work on streets and paths.
The ecology group explained in a statement that the chemical herbicide used (Glyphosate) is considered by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to be “probably carcinogenic for humans.”
However, the announcement by the WHO does not ban the use of products containing Glyphosate.
“Several councils keep fumigating paths and streets, even around the inner centre areas of towns, including Palma,” said the GOB.
They have urged all governments to consider the toxicity of the product for humans and animals and the cancellation of all fumigation work using Glyphosate.
