THE strong winds and rain registered in Almuñecar on Wednesday (April 8) have caused great damage on the Velilla, Pozuelo and Marina del Este beaches.
Local Police officers, firefighters and municipal staff were forced to attend the areas as the waves reached and damaged several beach bars, according to the information provided by Head of the Coasts Department, Luis Aragon.
Mr Aragon explained that hundreds of litres of water had to be drained from the bars and the improvement works carried out days before the Easter holidays have been practically destroyed.
He finally stressed that the recovery would be hard and would need help from the regional or central governments, as a lot of sand has been lost.
