Private owners give in and fix public lift

RESIDENTS of Torresol in El Bajondillo, Torremolinos, have decided to pay for work to get the public lift running again now and fight with the council later.

Although the lift was given to the council along with gardens and other assets when the residential complex was built and Amifto Disabled Association has been running it for years and charging for rides, when a landslide damaged a supporting wall and it was deemed dangerous, the finger was pointed at the complex as the responsible party.

Things came to a head when the mayor issued an order for Torresol community to do the work within 72 hours stating if not the council would have to step in.

After studying accounts and quotes, the community decided it was better to have it done itself on a lower budget than get landed with a hefty bill from the council later.

Although it seemed to make sense, residents are still angry and complain that they have had to pay to use the lift for years as it did not belong to them, yet as soon as expensive repairs were required it was considered their responsibility.
