TORREVIEJA has welcomed the opening of the first employment centre for disabled people in Alicante Province.

START is a Special Employment Centre specifically devoted to finding employment for those with severe mental illness and was inaugurated by Mayor Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the President of ADIEM (the Association for the Protection and Integration of People with Mental Illness in the Vega Baja) Gertrudis Marcos. It currently employs seven people and the aim is to develop a social economy project in the area to get work for at least 15 mentally disabled people over the next two years.

The mayor congratulated ADIEM for initiating the project that will allow for reintegration into the labour market for those with mental disabilities. The mayor showed his commitment to the scheme by announcing that the town hall will make provisions, through the Local Development Agency, to hire people from START.

The centre is situated within the ADIEM building in Call la Paz.
