Salon Varietes celebrates 30 years in the spotlight

THE Euro Weekly News rubbed shoulders with some of the great founders of the Salon Varietes, Fuengirola, to join in the celebrations of their 30-year anniversary.

Old and new members of the society have been involved in producing an anniversary magazine, which is on sale to raise funds for this wonderful theatre. Richard Wood had remodelled the design for the magazine, which has been compiled with endearing memorabilia.

At the launch, David Ratford, President Emeritus, gave a witty and uplifting speech to reminisce on the early days of how the theatre evolved.

Pat Palmer accompanied David, somewhat like a magician’s assistant, to turn the pages of history of the publication for all to see. They thanked everybody who had made the last 30 years a success, Val Williams, the president of FOTA (Friends Of The Theatre), Graham Cherry, president of SALVA and many others. FOTA has organised many events in the past that have greatly helped the Salon Varieties to continue to survive through difficult times.

Graham said, “This year has been better than ever as we have produced some exceptional shows such as Allo, Allo, which packed in an audience of 1400 where we usually have an average of 800 on a show run.”

He also said that it was now so much more difficult to get round the royalties that many venture capitalists buy up, which makes production costs impossible. However, The Salon Varietes Theatre is going from strength to strength as they have a very strong community behind them.

There will be a show on June 13 in which 80 people perform an extravaganza of music from various shows. This will be held in the Mijas Village auditorium. There are currently raffle tickets being sold up until the show date where the winning ticket will be drawn and the proceeds will go to CUDEC.

EWN looks forward to another 30 years and beyond of the company staging many more quality shows. Happy Anniversary!
