City intends to fine ‘Malaga Midas’

A YOUNG man arrested for painting urban fittings gold in Rincon de la Victoria and Malaga City will be let off by Rincon’s mayor, but fined by Malaga.

The 20-year-old graffiti-artist, who was caught carrying photos of the mysterious golden items which appeared in both areas and told police his motivation was artistic, had sparked intense debates when his work appeared.

While some called it art, others said it was some sort of campaign and the more straight-laced called it plain vandalism.

Many thought it was indeed art, and even Rincon Mayor Francisco Salado commented in a more amused than angry tone that at least local residents seemed to like the colour.

“It would have been worse if they had been bright pink or fluorescent yellow, or they’d decided to paint the whole town black,” the mayor declared.

Although Salado has stated that Rincon will not be fining the young man and may even create a project with him to continue with the new decorations, Malaga City Hall has declared that public fittings were damaged and regulations will be followed to the word, meaning the young man will face fines.
