Sale of the century: airports from €1

DO you have any spare change in your pocket? If so, you could be the owner of your own €1 billion airport for as little as €1.

Ciudad Real Airport, which was built in 2009 at a cost in excess of €1 billion, was closed three years later due to financial problems. At the time, the administrators ruled that it should be sold off for €100 million.

Since then, as nobody has stepped forward to buy, the price has slowly fallen, to €70 million, then to €40 million, before being scrapped altogether. Now, the white elephant is up for auction with no reserve. So, for the price of a tin of beans you could have your own airport.

There is a drawback, however – you will have to pay off the few hundred million euros of debt that your prize new car park has accrued. Since it saw its final commercial flight in 2011, maintenance has continued, building up more debt.

But don’t worry if you miss this bargain, apparently there are a few more in Spain that may suit your pocket.
