Himalaya Tandoori family Nepal Earthquake Appeal
THE Nepal earthquake that has taken more than 6,600 lives and devastated large areas of the country is very much on the minds of the Costa Blanca’s Nepali population. The Himalaya Tandoori in Moraira is staffed by Nepalese, all of whom have been affected by the catastrophe.Chef Thapa and his team are frantically worried, as although the tremors have subsided the destruction of sanitary infrastructure and risk of serious disease makes the country a very dangerous place to be.Yam, front of house manager, said: “My family are okay but I would like to be there to help them. Although they are alive, their houses have been destroyed and they cannot salvage anything as it is too dangerous to return.”The restaurant staff feel they are as family, and as such feel the pain together. Praju, who used to work at the restaurant, returned to Nepal earlier this year due to family commitments. She has been in constant contact, sending harrowing pictures showing devastation and misery. Alarmingly there seems to be no aid or help reaching remote villages. Houses have been reduced to rubble and centuries of historic monuments and temples have been destroyed.Secondary tremorsSecond Chef Dilux told The Euro Weekly News: “The town where I grew up and where my family still live is relatively undamaged. However, it has been evacuated as a precaution in case of secondary tremors.”Staff member Parkas was due to return to Moraira on Saturday May 2 but has stayed in Nepal to help in any way he can.Appeal to Help NepalThe Himalaya Tandoori family is asking for help through an appeal on Sunday May 10 at the restaurant in Moraira from 7pm. The next day, Monday May 11, there will be an appeal at the Altea branch of the Himalaya from 7pm.At the end of each evening, two diners will count the cash in the till – this sum, plus any other donations, will be deposited in the appeal bank account and the sums raised will be posted in the restaurant’s windows. The money will be used to assist a children’s charity in the devastated region.Chef Thapa said: “We regard these people as brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts. We cannot stand by and not try to help. They desperately need medical and financial aid. Please help us to try to stop the suffering.”
