ALMERIA couples adopted 15 children last year, 10 of whom were Spanish.China and Russia are now tightening up conditions and departing from previous trends, and couples cleared to adopt abroad can wait up to six years before they are allocated a child, prompting more families to look closer to home.Paradoxically, the formalities for adopting abroad require around six months but take much longer in Spain. Nevertheless, once the Almeria families finally made it onto Andalucia’s adoptions register they had a shorter wait.The regional authorities did not turn down any of the Almeria adoption applications last year, although two were rejected between January and April this year. On a happier note, three children – all Spanish – were adopted during this period.
