Media Markt mania

Vincente Casado, Media Markt's first customer

THERE was a long line of customers waiting at the gate for the Finestrat opening of Media Markt’s 75th store in Spain.
Store Manager Alberto Martinez was busy making sure the last touches were in place in the brand new store. He said: “It is a very exciting day for Media Markt and for Finestrat. The store has cutting edge technology to assist the customer in making the right decision when buying consumer electronics.”
As the staff lined the entrance aisle they were shown a film, on a huge surround-.sound television, filmed on Benidorm beach with the staff as the stars, drawing gasps, shouts and applause as they recognised themselves and their colleagues. As the clock ticked toward 8am the gathered crowd became impatient to explore the latest Media Markt and take advantage of knockout special offers.
On a countdown from ten, the tension rose and the doors were open…
It was obvious from the surge in direction that customers had prioritised certain items. The television area was swamped as happy shoppers held their items securely and proceeded to the checkout.
The first man through the doors – and also the first man to reach the checkout, Vincente Casado, clutched his purchase tightly and said: “It was worth getting up early to get such a wonderful bargain.”
When asked who the television was for he smiled and said: “For myself and my wife.”
Alberto Martinez, in a brief minute away from the crowd, said: “We are overwhelmed by the turnout. We are very proud of this store and I am also very proud of my colleagues who have all worked so hard to make this happen.”
Snr Jose Ma Teruel, Regional Director of Media Markt, was there to assist in any way possible and he had his sleeves rolled up as he helped rearrange the quickly vanishing stock.
At the checkout Ana Maria was busy but had time to say how wonderful it was to be working in a modern store, with such a great atmosphere.
The store stocks more than 45,000 products in 2,500m2 of floor space with a dedicated service area of 200m2. There is also a special area for those who wish to ‘stop and go’ – where the customer does not have to enter the store to collect their pre-ordered items purchased online.
As customers left with their items, there was a ‘happy or not’ button – and the happy button was being pushed by everyone!
