CHOOSE WHICHEVER PIC YOU PREFER CRAZY CYCLING: Questions raised over positioning of cycling lane markings.
OVER €300,000 has been budgeted for the creation of cycle lanes along the Orihuela Costa, but with the completion of the lanes in Cabo Roig Urbanisation, it appears they have been given little thought as cycle lanes have been marked out in the middle of the road. Councillor Pedro Mancebo said: “A family with children on bikes cannot go through the middle of the street.”Local businessman Ray Kearney agreed they were impractical: “I was driving along this avenue and there were three parked cars by the kerb followed by a grey bin, there were four young teenagers cycling slowly in the new bicycle lane, they seemed quite nervous.“I imagine they normally cycled close to the footpath and not in the centre left of the road. My car was travelling slowly behind them but also on the bicycle lane as there was nowhere else to drive. When the cyclists passed the parked cars and the grey bin they became even more nervous and kept looking back at my car to see what I was going to do.“I indicated and passed them on their right as they wobbled nervously along in the left hand bicycle lane. Bicycle lanes should make cyclists feel and be safe.”Bike lanes are being created in Dehesa de Campoamor, La Zenia and Cabo Roig.
