Local police to test drivers for drugs

LOCAL Police in Alicante are to test drivers for drugs as well as alcohol.
Head of the local police, Jose Maria Conesa, said three new devices had been purchased for the officers to be able to test for drug addiction and said: “Alicante is one of the first local police forces to have these devices.”
Councillor for Security, Traffic and Transport, Juan Seva, said the introduction of the tests was part of actions to offer “specialisation and modernisation” of the local police force.
Within the last four years the local police have conducted 139,046 interventions, of which 131,268 were traffic related. The number of injuries from accidents has declined significantly from 1,226 on average per year to 765. There were 460 alcohol tests performed in the last year, of which more than three hundred were positive.
