A TORNADO that struck the city of Ciudad Acuña on the Mexican side of the US border has killed 13 people. Homes were uprooted and cars were flung against buildings, as the tornado roared through the city.
In the US, four more people were killed and 12 reported missing in flash floods. On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott expanded the emergency disaster zone in the state, adding 24 counties to the list of 13 already affected areas of the storms and flooding.
Abbott said the damage caused by the floods in central Texas was “absolutely devastating” and had been the result of “relentless, tsunami-type power.” Oklahoma was also hit hard.
Amongst the missing are a group of 12 people from two families staying in a house in Wimberley Valley, Texas. Witnesses reported seeing the house being pushed off its foundations by the expanding water of the Blanco river.
At least 2,000 Texans were forced from their homes on Monday. On Tuesday, evacuations got under way in Austin, Texas after another river overflowed its banks in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Back in Mexico, Mayor Evaristo Perez Rivera said 300 people were being treated in hospital, and up to 200 homes had been destroyed and three people were unaccounted for.
“There’s nothing standing, not walls, not roofs,” said Edgar Gonzalez, a spokesman for the city government, describing some of the destroyed homes in a square-mile area. By midday on Monday, 13 people were confirmed dead, including three children.
