THE Coasts Department of the Spanish Environment Ministry has this week begun the redevelopment of Almuñecar beaches La Caletilla and Cotobro, which were badly damaged during storms. The project includes the addition of sand to these areas as well as the surrounding area of Velilla breakwater.Works are being carried out with special machinery for loading and transport of vast amounts of sand, with the aim of speeding up work on the La Caletilla beach as much as possible. The sand used to redevelop these areas has been taken from the mouth of Rio Verde river in Fuente Piedra. These works are included in the emergency plan launched by the Environment Ministry after the strong winds and heavy rains registered in the Costa Tropical during the past winter season, which has a predicted budget of €900,000.
