SEVERAL residents of Palma have alerted authorities claiming to have seen baby tarantulas in a plot of land in the Portitxol area. The site is located between the National Police station and a supermarket.Pictures taken by residents were sent to the Son Espases hospital experts and other specialised groups who confirmed with 99 per cent certainty that the spiders were, in fact, tarantulas.“The temperature and humidity in Mallorca serve as the ideal climate for the reproduction of this species,” said one of the experts. “It is possible that tarantula eggs arrived in the interior of packets or as pets that could have potentially escaped or have been abandoned by their owners.”
