Road deaths on the up as traffic authority begins new campaign

THE DGT traffic authority has launched a new campaign this week, with increased checks for drugs and alcohol consumption amongst drivers.
Running from today (June 1) until Sunday June 7, the campaign aims to cut down on the number of drivers drinking or taking drugs and raise awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence.
As the campaign began, figures were announced for the number of deaths on Spanish roads so far this year.
A total of 91 fatalities in May (14 more than in May 2014) broke the recent downward trend and took figures for the first five months of the year over those of the same period in 2014, with 409 so far this year compared to 402 at the same point last year.
