A MINOR fire was rapidly extinguished without problems in El Saltador (Huercal-Overa).The blaze consumed approximately 3,000 square metres of mainly agricultural land and affected only 700 square metres of woodland.Over the last four weeks Almeria Province has already had fires in Sierra de Bedar as well as another in Huercal-Overa earlier last month that destroyed more than 40 hectares of scrub and pines in the area near the Cuevas del Almanzora reservoir. It required three days to get under control and was not declared extinguished until two days after that.Initially 18.5 hectares were destroyed in the fire which was revived by high winds, affecting a further 27.4 hectares of scrub, pinewoods and young pines.Despite early suspicions that the Huercal fire was deliberate, its origins have now been traced to sparks from a strimmer. The Endesa subcontractor clearing land beneath electricity cables complied with all required safety measures, leading Environment department investigators to classify the fire as an accident and not negligence.
