Meson Gitano excavations affected Alcazaba

WORK on stabilising the south wall of Almeria city’s Alcazaba is now complete.
The Moorish fortress closed temporarily as a precautionary measure more than a month ago after rendering began to fall from one section of the wall. This was repaired and the monument reopened although restoration work continued.
Most of the scaffolding has now been removed except at the point where the regional government began an ongoing €60,000 restoration project in April.
Facings on the affected section of wall almost certainly began to crumble owing to city hall’s excavations at the Meson Gitano site below the Alcazaba, the regional government said. Although there is no conclusive proof, Junta sources revealed that large scale earth movements and constant vibration from traffic were responsible for the damage.
