WALK FOR LIFE: Women, men and pets all took part.

MORE than €10,000 has been raised for the AECC cancer charity from the weekend’s Walk for Life event.
The Playa Flamenca beach front was awash with pink as around 500 women, men, children and pets got into fiesta mode as they prepared to walk the five-kilometre route.
Friends Philomena, Mable and Queenie were all taking part. Queenie is one of the Pink Ladies’ fundraisers, making €700 through sponsorship. She has battled cancer twice so it is a cause close to her heart. “We have to try and find a cure,” she said.
Deebie Weedon was also taking part. Debbie started the first Walk for Life event in 2003    after participating in the London Moonwalk event.  A breast cancer survivor herself, she arranged for a similar event in Quesada and Rojales and in the following six years raised €200,000. Taking a back seat, Maria Wilson and her Pink Ladies launched one further down the coast which Debbie now supports.
Maria said the turnout was one of the best they had ever had and with sponsorship still to come in, hopes the final figure could top €12,000.
She thanked Sunshine Fm, Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, Stevie Spit for hosting the day and all the artists for giving their time for free. They all sang Run for Life by Melissa Etheridge in tribute to a shocked Maria. “As I’ve now been breast cancer-free for five years, it was very emotional. I was so full of pride, I can’t thank them enough,” she said.
Donations can still be made at the AECC office in Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre or call 965 329 841
