THE Spanish boat MAPFRE won their second Volvo Ocean Race in-port race on Saturday, but with only two metres to spare it made a thrilling contest in the Portuguese sun. June 6 in Lisbon, Portugal, witnessed the Spanish boat MAPFRE, helmed by skipper Iker Martínez, use all his matchracing skills to edge past Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s Brit, Ian Walker, in a sprint to the finish line as they gybed together at exactly the same time. At one stage, it looked as if the Spanish boat would take a penalty for blocking the Emirati boat’s path, but Martínez judged the final movement to perfection
