French basilica falls victim to flames

PART of Saint-Donatien basilica in Nantes, France, has been destroyed by a large fire. Fire broke out at the 19th century building after morning Mass today, June 15, leading to evacuation of worshippers according to local media.
A team of about 40 firefighters were called out to extinguish the blaze, believed to have started on the roof where work was underway.
Nantes Mayor Johanna Rolland thanked firefighters for their rapid and brave work in a statement on Facebook, stressing the importance of the basilica as a symbol for the Catholic community.
Severe damage has been caused to the roof of the basilica, and work is underway to attempt to save precious objects inside the building including the organ.
