No present solution for Bajo Andarax drainage

BOTH options suggested by the regional government for Bajo Andarax wastewater have been dismissed as unviable.
Almeria City Hall questioned the Junta’s proposal that wastewater be sent either to El Bobar or El Toyo. Neither solution was practicable, said specialists from the Municipal Services department.
The El Toyo treatment plant has sufficient capacity for Bajo Andarax wastewater but no connection exists, the councillor explained.
At present the Bajo Andarax system cannot be connected to El Bobar because extensions to the plant are incomplete, they claimed. “And according to the terms of the contract, once the plant is finished it needs a six-month trial before linkups can be made,” the department said.
Manuel Guzman, acting Public Works and Citizens’ Services councillor, maintained that drainage pipes bringing Bajo Andarax wastewater had not yet been connected.
“There is no real way of sending it to El Bobar,” Guzman said.
Wastewater from Bajo Andarax towns is now dumped in the River Andarax, intensifying existing problem caused by mosquitoes. “The Junta de Andalucia is to blame,” city hall said. “Enlarging the El Bobar plant should have been finished in 2004 according to the agreement between the administrations, but it is still only 70 per cent finished.”
