PSOE councillor in Bigastro steps down

HEAD of the PSOE list and mayoral candidate for Bigastro, Raul Valerio Medina, has stepped down.
The councillor has renounced his seat on the local government and will not be a part of the 2015-2019 legislature. The Socialist said he made his decision following the elections of May 24 in which his campaign won five council seats compared to six in the previous term. “The election result is clear and I think I must take responsibility for it,” he said.
Raul Valerio Medina has received multiple allegations of corruption in several court cases arising from his tenure as mayor of the municipality, a position to which he acceded after the arrest and subsequent resignation of his predecessor, Jose Joaquin Moya (PSOE). Although the Socialist regional executive asked him publicly to step down and not run in the elections, the local assembly of the party endorsed his candidacy.
Now he has resigned, number six on the PSOE list of candidates, Maria del Carmen Medina Oltra, will take a place on the council, which is headed by Maria Teresa Belmonte Sanchez of the PP, the conservative party having obtained the majority.
